Desktop QR Code Reader

What are QR Codes?:
A QR code is a lot like a barcode you see on most products. QR codes are a great way to share information like websites and contact info. They can be scanned using your camera equipped device and a proper QR code processing app (For Android, I use the Barcode Scanner App, and on iPhone I use QR Reader for iPhone.) Once the code is scanned and processed, it takes you directly to the URL on your device, or shows you whatever else was encoded in the QR code. I love the ease ability of QR codes, just a quick scan, and the content is on your device. For Example, there is a great plug-in for Google Chrome called QR-Code Tag (For Firefox there’s Mobile Barcode) which lets you generate a QR code for the site you are currently viewing. This is super handy if your reading an article, and need to take it on the go. So, what about reading a QR code from your phone to your desktop computer? Well, surprisingly that wasn’t as easy. I spent some time digging around the internet, and could not find a good cross-platform application for reading QR codes onto your desktop computer. The only thing I found that was somewhat close, was an AS3 library. At that time, the only thing using the library was embedded on a web page… which isn’t the most ideal solution if your wanting to just scan something quickly. So, I took the initiative to implement the library into an Adobe AIR app that can be run on basically any system. I call it QRreader. Download it HERE

  1. I went and made a security exception in order to download the app on my macbook pro, only to be told software could not detect my webcam. waste o’ time!

  2. Salut !
Exista aplicatie care de pe desktop sa citeasca un QRC continut intr-un fisier salvat in hard ?

  3. I’ve tried using Adobe AIR 3.0 as well as the latest version available of Adobe AIR, but either way the app crashes immediately when I open it… Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

  4. It works, brackets red and then…surprise nothing on the result screen, why? Is there some times protected information? Is that possible?

    Thanks.

  5. I can’t get it to work on my MacBook Pro. Have downloaded Adobe Air, but still nothing – no red brackets, nothing. I have tested 3 QR codes with this, and none of them work. They do, however, work with my iPad code reader.

    Suggestions?

  6. I had it working afew hours ago and it was great but now it does the red corner flashing thing then no output. Before it would open the webpage straight away which is what i need. Any ideas? Thanks in anticipation.

  7. I used QRReader on an xp desktop with a Logitech Pro 9000 webcam. Someone stole the webcam and I’m trying to replace it. I can’t find this model from my approved vendor sources. Do you know if the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 would work?

  8. I installed QRreader, and I like the way it works. very well written, and best of all it even runs flawlessly on my windows XP x64 system.
    Again. nicely done.

  9. QRreader works fine with Adobe Air 3.4 and Widows Vista. (Believe it or not, but this is something Vista actually handles!)

You do need steady hands though, to hold the source QR code up to your webcam. QRreader copes with movement reasonably well, and I have yet to find its limits. I’ll test them as time goes by. For the moment, I’ve avoided paying hundreds of dollars for a smartphone.

QRreader can be set to go straight to the website, and does so.

And yes, Mr. QR can buy some coffee.

  10. I installed your qreader. On first scan the software flashed red and beeped.

I changed the settings to open URL automatically. Since it will flash red, no beeping and doesn’t open a browser.

Installed browsers Google Chrome and IE 8

  11. I downloaded the QR Reader for my PC. It works on 2 x 2 QR codes but will not read any larger or any smaller size codes. I write lots of QR codes and I need to be able to read them. I have to ask friends to use their smart phones to read them before I publish them on the web sites. I refuse to buy a smart phone that I do not need.

Is there any way to fix this issue? I am using a Logitech HD Webcam C510. Do I need to buy a different web cam?

I appreciate any assistance that you can give.

  12. I have the QR reader installed plus Adobe Air. I can scan a QR code, the four white corners turn red, the thing bleeps, and then ………… nothing. I thought it showed a result in the panel, but still nothing despite many attempts. Any ideas? I am running Windows 2000 on a laptop. Is this the problem, because I cannot get it to do anything on a Windows 7 desktop either?

  13. Muchas gracias ya descargue e instale y funciona voy a probar luego con algunos QR a ver como baila…..
Gracias esfuerzo e intensión dice le proverbio con la sola intensión es suficiente y basta

  14. Even with using older version of Aiwave, still doesnt scan, although it does all the going red business! Waste of time!
NOW it wont remove the program!

  15. Marlox –

    Regarding your comment,
“you could edit the link you provide to download Adobe Air 3.0 be made to redirect to the general Air download page where we can select the operating system version as opposed to how it is now directly downloading the Mac .dmg version.”

    …I am not getting this
if it takes this to get it working, I have no idea how to do this.
    Can you give me a step-by-step ?

    Many Thanks

  16. Thanks for QR reader.

If I can make a suggestion though, you could edit the link you provide to download Adobe Air 3.0 be made to redirect to the general Air download page where we can select the operating system version as opposed to how it is now directly downloading the Mac .dmg version.

  17. Can’t get it to work. I first installed Air 3.3, but then learned I needed to uninstall and install Air 3.0 which I did. Still does not work. imac running snow leopard….

  18. So the version that was “updated” was the same as the old-still doesn’t work. 🙁 Would like for this to work as it says on Mac…big training coming up for principals and this won’t be included. Bummer.

  19. Trying to get QR Reader to work on my mac to share with principals and I get blank readings. I have Adobe Air 3.0 and I’ve reinstalled both in attempt to troubleshoot. Any ideas?

  20. Nice & useful program. But I can´t find where the result of the scan is stored.
    Thanks!

  21. I have downloaded QR reader for my iMac and my MacBook. When I generated a QR code the MacBook could read it but the iMac couldn’t. Do you know why?

  22. Oh Man. You helped me to understand about this and can watch the functionality. Thanks a lot for this lesson. Regards.

  23. Is it possible to get the output of QRReader application to cocoa application programmatically as this was developed in Applescript? If yes then How? Please let me know If I am on wrong path…. Thanks in advance.

  24. Hi Dan,

You have a great blog. I found this article on the QRcodeReader particularly helpful.

Unfortunately, I have a QR code that cannot be read with any application on the comp or android. I’m not sure why it is not recognized 🙁 Can you maybe have a look and try your magic on it?

    Thanks,
